why you should give us a chance!
Owl Post is not a traditional Harry Potter community in any sense of the word. We do not have just one premise or one plot, per se. The Wizarding World created by JK Rowling is open to many plot and character possibilities! We are here to explore those with original characters and original commuinty wide plots that will result in drama, fun & silly hijinks. We are here to have fun, ignore petty ooc differences and write. Owl Post combines many aspects of what old school communities used to bring to the table and many new aspects of rp into one community. As mods, we will have standards regarding writing but we will also have an open mind when it comes to plots and characters. Why should you give us a chance? Because we miss the way things used to be and things used to be fun. Our mind will be set on building a long lasting community with dedicated players that don't care about much outside of writing and being as friendly as possibly both in character and out of character.
what is canon at owlpost?
Universe wise, everything is canon. History wise, nothing is! Why? Well, our game is only set in the universe that JKR created. We plan to introduce our own dark wizards and villains. Some will have the same aspirations as Voldemort and some will not. This is a world building community. There are many communities out there that allows you to write out the canon story and Owl Post is here for a more original take on plots and characters. Having said that, we do only allow original characters. We understand that there are tons of canon characters to choose from with very little background canon information however, we'd prefer to keep it all original so there's not confusion or any gray areas with what canon names we would allow or not allow to be played. We understand this isn't the norm for many HP roleplayers but we ask that you please keep an open mind regarding this. We promise that creating a character from scratch can be just as fun!
the basic rules of owl post
Please remember that this is a community and communities not only thrive on activity, but friendliness. This means actively plotting and welcoming all new members and all new characters when you can. If you're here to only interact with a few people, this might not be the place for you. Please do not cross the OOC/IC line. Do not god-mod or involve a character in a major plot point or twist without discussing it with them first. Always use our ooc community to plot and ask questions when you need to. We shouldn't have to remind everyone of this over and over but to be safe, do not blur the lines! Things are shared publicly here in threads and updates but that does not mean you can take your ooc knowledge of an event or character and take it ic. Remember that your character doesn't know what you know. Any crossing of this line will result in a warning and if that warning isn't heeded we will ask you to leave the community. Please avoid starting any ooc drama. We are all adults here and we don't have the time or patience to deal with anything petty. Constant drama and breaking of the rules will get your removed from Owl Post quickly and without any question, especially if you've been warned multiple times. Long story short, be mature and be an adult.
applying, acceptance and rejection
Your character journals can be anything you'd like relating to your character. They can be in character, out of character or a mix of both. We do ask however that you do not use any underscores, numbers or any excessive and unnecessary letters. When looking at an application, we take a few things into account when considering it. First off, we'll look for decent grammar (no one is perfect but the basics should be there) and spelling. If you can't construct a simple sentence we may not be the right community for you. We are looking for people who put thought into their writing as well as details on occasion. One to two or three liners probably wouldn't fit in here either. Character personalities are also important. Remember to round your character out with flaws no matter how beautiful or smart they are, realize they aren't perfect and try to balance them. We will be honest if we don't think that your writing is up to par with what we're looking for for Owl Post or if we think that your character wouldn't fit in for the community we have in mind.
character abilities
We do offer the ability to give your characters special abilities. For example we allow werewolves, metamorphs, vampires, seers, etc. We ask that you do not give your characters more than one. Meaning, if your character is a werewolf, please do not also make them a metamorphagus, seer, etc. We ask this so that more people have a chance to play a character with an ability and that when you bring in multiple characters, you also consider this. We will be capping abilities after first adds based on what kind of abilities are being used the most, how rare they are and if we'd like to see other kinds of abilities used. Remember: not every character can have an ability! But, if you'd like to add one later to your character you can put them on a waiting list for when caps go up or for when a spot opens up.

how active you should be
You must update your character's journals once every month. Please continue reading to see what constitutes as a proper update. You must also participate in one public group thread a month! We ask that you provide a comments enabled journal entry once every month for other members of the community to reply to. Journal updates work a little differently around these parts. You do not have to post a normal journal update if you don't want to. You can post something photoshop related to your character or a narrative. Your comment enabled entries can be anything you'd like. You can ask the community a question or write a public journal entry, announce an event or party, etc. Those can also count as your monthly updates. This just means you're posting something active once a month, even if it's very simple. There are no word counts, just keep in mind that one has to be enabled for the rest of the community to reply to. We do offer extensions as well, you just need to let us know when you need one.
handwriting & parchments
Here at Owl Post we've decided to implement your character's handwriting! It's all in good fun. Choosing a handwriting font to apply to your character is a great because you can use it to write owls, letters, signatures, etc. in photoshop to update with. For more information on this and some sites you can look through fonts at please visit this page. By adding a custom - "parchment" - option at Owl Post, we hope to expand your ways of interacting with characters. By insanejournal terms, a parchment is a custom. You set up a custom post in your journal (backdating usually helps) and set it so that only one person can see it. We call this a parchment. Our characters charm a piece of parchment or a notebook to be viewable to only one person that they write back and forth with. This way your characters can have conversations one on one with other characters so that you can build in character relationships steadily and handily. This shouldn't take away from plotting, writing or your activity on the friend's page. Please take advantage of this by asking characters or players ic or ooc for a parchment!
Occupations
When it comes to occupations in the world of Harry Potter, we understand that aurors, hit wizards, pro quidditch players and ministry workers are very popular selections and that's okay! They are fun occupations to write out after all. However, we do ask that when you choose these occupations for your characters, you use some sense of realism. Remember when developing a character's age and picking a pb for them, that someone who is fresh out of Hogwarts isn't going to have a starting position on any professional quidditch teams and that your character isn't going to walk into the ministry and be an unspeakable or auror after a week. Remember there is years of training, preparation and hard work even after Hogwarts. If you need help figuring it out, feel free to ask the community or visit the Lexicon or Harry Potter wiki page.

CHARACTER AGES, PBS, ETC
Our game is post Hogwarts so your character must be at least 18 years old. We aren't accepting Hogwarts students but you can bring in the professors and staff if you desire. Just keep in mind that they'll be away from London and the main setting quite a bit. We do allow pbs from the film to be used as other characters. After all, the community isn't canon in that sense. We ask that you do not age your characters up or down over 3 years of your chosen pb's age. Please stick to using actors, actresses, musicians and more mainstream models. Please do not use original pbs, alt models, etc. We're sorry if that causes any inconvenience and we will not be making any exceptions. If you're unsure about a pb, feel free to contact us and ask if they're appropriate.
Everything else
We prefer that you limit yourself to four characters max. We ask that you only take on as many as you can handle being properly active with to begin with, but we feel four is a good enough number for anyone. If you need to go on hiatus, Please contact a moderator with the approximate time you need away. Real life comes first and we understand that. We allow up to three weeks on a hiatus but we offer longer hiatuses if you come back and get into contact with us so we know that you're still around and coming back. If it's an extreme circumstance, let us know and we'll do everything we can to accommodate you. Inactive members will be removed when they fail to meet our activity rules. You may reapply if you were removed but are still around and didn't have a chance to meet one of the requirements, but you'll be asked to update before we re-accept you.
